“New Things” – A Poem

I’ve been inspired by some things lately and decided to try writing a poem to express my thoughts. It’s called “New Things.” Some of the inspiration came from Isaiah 43:18-19, which reads,

“Do not call to mind the former things, or ponder things of the past. Behold, I will do something new, now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.”

Hope you enjoy!

Healing takes time, so they say
“Just wait it out, and you’ll be okay”
Growth is a long haul, the story goes
“Don’t expect much from one day on the road”
Perhaps it’s true from a secular view
But couldn’t God do a thing totally new?
Path through the wilderness, wanderers free
Streams in the desert, His specialty
No harm in realism, so long as we consider
Our God is quite real, able to deliver

New habits, new patterns, difference stark
On paths untrodden, I am poised to embark
Out of the rut and onto the ground
Where familiarity is left and freedom abounds
Rather than floundering in the status quo
I’ll pray for the outlandish, go for the gusto
Maybe I’ll reach it, maybe I won’t
At least I looked up, stretched for the high note

If healing is a journey,
If growth comes with difficulty,
That’s okay too
I will praise His name, I will be content
But I’ll ask for what’s beyond me
While trusting His intent
Why not pray for big things? May it not be said of me,
“He did not ask, so he did not receive”

And if on this pursuit I’ve so far described
I fall flat on my face in life’s crazy ride
I’ll lean into His loving correction
Repentance followed by inspiration
And here is the part where I make a decision:
Will I cling to dejection, guilt, regret?
Or will I press onward, former failings forget?
There’s no better time to dust off than right now
If His mercies are new, then He’ll show me how
Now it springs forth, are you not aware?
He is doing new things, and I want to be there
